Symbolism
Notes left by exterminators hired to clean the house state that they could not find any signs of a rat infestation despite being hired multiple times. The Artist is hallucinating a large rat infestation inside his house, which worsens as the game progresses. He believes that these rats are the cause for his declining mental and physical health, as well as the loss of his artistic talent. These rats are likely a manifestation of his schizophrenia, and may represent his inability to accept his own harmful actions towards his family.
